WHAT S AN EXPANSION JOINT ? Broad based buildings are designed as independent blocks to prevent the damages that may occur in the building structure due to expansions , contractions or ground settlements. The gaps between those blocks are called Dilatation or Expansion Joint . AT WHICH TYPE OF BUILDINGS EXPANSION JOINT MUST THE KEPT? At the floors and walls of broad based buildings such as; shopping malls, hotels, business centers, factories, stadiums, hyper markets depending on the type of the soil and weight of the building expansion joints must be kept in every 20 - 30 meters. At very high buildings , expansion joints must be kept between the high and low blocks. The places and widths of expansion joints must be determined by the structural engineer by considering the horizontal and vertical movements of the buildings. THE DAMAGES , THAT MAY BE FACED IF THE EXPANSION JOINT PROFILE IS NOT USED , INSTALLED IN THE WRONG WAY OR WRONG PROFILE CHOSEN: The cracks on the floors, walls & ceilings , deformation in the profile , insulation problems and damages at fixation points will occur. Resolving those damages and applying the right profile will be an additional waste of time and money.
